When picking up your hire vehicle from Skala Potamia why not take the time to check out the town’s beautiful long sandy beach with its abundance of restaurants, tavernas and beach bars which line its pedestrian-friendly promenade.
The town also has a small harbour with a traditional picturesque old building or “Tarsana”, which is still used today to host cultural events. You will also find numerous souvenir shops and small friendly supermarkets selling traditional Greek products behind the promenade.
There is a cash machine a few minutes walk away situated on the main coastal road not far from the main resort entrance as it turns to the right; there is also a petrol station, which is easy to reach a little further on.
Heading south on the main coastal road out of Skala Potamia your journey will take you to the resort of Kinira with its two sandy/pebble beaches, hotels and tavernas which overlook the pretty island of Kinira. Your next port of call is Paradise Beach which has a beautiful long sandy beach with tavernas. Please bear in mind that both roads down to the beach are only accessible by a Jeep 4x4.
Next is Aliki with its astounding surroundings, archaeological ruins and picturesque small bay surrounded by restaurants and tavernas. This is a very busy beauty spot and parking here can be difficult. If you want to see more, then the Monastery of Archangelos is well worth a visit.
Heading inland from Skala Potamia is the village of Potamia with its traditional houses made of stone, here you can visit the Polygnotos Vagis Museum, which houses many of his sculptures.
Adjoining Skala Potamia is Golden Beach with its many restaurants, tavernas and beach bars and of course golden sandy beach. Behind is the picturesque mountain village of Panagia with its very narrow streets filled with restaurants, tavernas and shops. In high season the journey through Panagia can be very problematic due to the narrow road and volume of traffic so drive carefully. After a mountain climb, the main town of Thassos (Limenas) stretches out below with its large harbour, hotels, restaurants, tavernas, shops and beaches. There is also a museum and numerous archaeological sites to visit.
