Historical Data

Theologos was first the island’s capital. (*Today the capital is Limenas/Thassos Town). The village name was first referenced in 1827 during the Byzantine years. The name comes from a monastery dedicated to Ioannis (one of Jesus Christ first students). The monastery still exists and is located in today’s cemetery in the north part of the village.

As a settlement it was established during the Ottoman Empire in 1591. Due to piracy, many locals from coastal villages looked for a shelter up in the village of Theologos. Greeks and Turks used to live in two different neighbourhoods. Archaggelos church known as the area of “Metohi” was the border between these two neighbourhoods.

Theologos Churches

Theologos has two main churches which are open during summer time from 08:00 am to 18:00 pm for visit. St. Dimitrius and St. Paraskevi, which were built in 1803 and 1843 respectively. Upon their construction, the road connecting them became the central street of the village as it seen today.
